One thing to warn you about--as a girl I used to think dreads looked pretty sexy on certain guys, until I hugged one of those guys and actually touched the dreads! Keep them clean because nothing turns off a woman more than crispy, smelly hair!

p.s. in answer to your question you can start forming your hair into braids and dreads before it hits your shoulders--as long as the hair is long enough to rat up a little bit, you can start up.
