How long does it take for african-american male hair to grow a month or a year?

I was planning on getting my hair twisted when it grew to at least an inch. I know that eventually I'll have to take it out to wash my hair and get it redone. I didn't want to walk around with a big afro so I wanted my hair to grow down the sides of my head (like a girl's hair) when I take it out. I wanted to know if it is possible to get about 10 inches of growth within a year and what can I do to get it to grow down the sides without relaxing it or using a hot comb.

you can get 6-10 inches of growth in a year if your hair grows fast.Usually, african hair grows about half an inch every month.

It won't fall down the sides of your head like a girl's unless you straighten it.But the other option is to dreadlock it;it will grow and fall down your back naturally that way.
