When you shave your legs, pubic area, or underarms why does it grow back but if you don't shave it, it eventually stops growing? The hair on your head continues to get long but not on your body.

Your hair weather on your head or on your body goes threw three growth phases. These growth phases are anagen, catagen, and telogen. Now to explain.

Anagen or the growth phase, new hair is produced. During this phase, hair cells are produced faster than any other normal cell in the human body.

Catagen or the transition phase is the brief transition period between the growing and resting phases of the hair follicle. It signals the end of the growth phase. During the catagen phase, the follicle canal shrinks and detaches from the dermal papilla. The hair bulb disappears and the shrunken root end forms a rounded club. Less than 1% of the hair is in this phase at any one time.

Telogen phase or the resting phase is the final phase in the hair cycle and lasts untill fully grown hair is shed. The hair is either shed during this phase or remains in place untill the next anagen phase, when the new hair growing in pushes it out.

The rate of hair growth varies on different parts of the body, between sexes, and with age. Your body has a determened time for the growth phase and it is different for each part of the body. The hair never stops this cycle (unless you damage the follicle with lasers or waxing for long periods of time). Because this is happening at different times all over the body and only 10% of the hair on each part of the body is in the telogen phase at one time you do not notice this.

Your hair never stops growing. It just falls out or gets pulled out when it gets too long. Don't worry, that is not losing your hair, it is just replacing the old hair with newer hair, and you do it all the time.
